Return Received: what it means.
The IRS has your return and is processing it. The tracker shows no refund date at this stage.
Want the actual day?
Your account transcript shows the code behind your status. Add it for a likely date from people in the same situation.

How long Return Received lasts
The IRS issues most e-filed refunds in fewer than 21 days, and says to allow 3 weeks from the day you e-filed. A mailed return takes 6 weeks or more from the day the IRS receives it.
Returns with the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit stay here until at least mid-February: the law does not let the IRS issue those refunds earlier.
When to look closer
If you e-filed more than 21 days ago, or the tracker shows a four-digit reference code or a tax topic, something needs attention. Your account transcript shows exactly what: a code 570 hold, a 971 notice, or a 846 refund already issued.
Why there is no date
The IRS manual describes three stages. Return Received shows no projected date; Refund Approved shows the date the refund will be sent; Refund Sent shows the date it went to your bank or was mailed.
Questions people ask
Is Return Received a bad sign?
No. Every return starts there. It becomes a question only after about 3 weeks for an e-filed return, or 6 weeks for a paper one.
How often does the status change?
The tracker updates no more than once a day.
